Kandy, Sri Lanka's second largest city, is charming, beautiful, relaxed and full of colours, history, religious sights and culture and it is no surprise that it is very well set up for tourists. It was the last capital of the ancient kingdoms of Sri Lanka, which fell in 1815 after the invasion of British troops.
Kandy lies in the midst of hills on the scenic Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. The town is home to the UNESCO world heritage site listed Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), which draws thousands of pilgrims from all over the world to Kandy annually, as it is one of the most sacred places of worship in Buddhism.
It is easy to spend a few days in Kandy, as the town and its surroundings have plenty to offer from many temples, historical sites, colourful markets and streets, gardens and parks to hiking and walking in the nearby Knuckles Ranges or around the impressive Victoria Reservoir. Kandy is also a good base to visit the historical city of Matale and the UNESCO world heritage site Cave Temples in Dambulla to the north. If leaving early, the world famous historical site of Sigirya can also be visited in a day trip.
